Some cool tips on keeping your pets safe this summer

 As temperatures start to rise, so do health risks to your pets. Today we are going to give you some quick tips on keeping your pets cool while letting them enjoy the outdoors!

1.Keeping Them Hydrated

This is THE MOST important way to keep your pets cool. Keep a few water bowls around the house or outside for them. You can even place some ice cubes in the bowls to keep the water nice and cool.

2. Let Your Pet Rest

We want your pets to be able to get outside and play but they can so easily get overheated. Limit outdoor playtime whenever it's a bit too hot outside. For some good brain stimulation, snuffle mats for dogs are a great way for them to play while keeping cool indoors.

3. Water Aerobics

If your dog loves water then you're all set! If you have a pool, let your dog jump in and swim away. If not, a small kitty pool filled half way with some cool water is a great way to let them enjoy some fun in the sun. Keep in mind, they can still get overheated in a pool if they get too excited so be sure and monitor their playtime.

4. Cooling Mats

If your pet tends to find cool places to lay down, consider a cooling mat. There are many different kinds and sizes available to purchase.

6. Cool Pet Toys

If your dog always has a toy in their mouth you can pop that into the freezer to cool it off. There are also chew toys designed to be filled with water and frozen to stay cooler for much longer.

7. Sprinklers

If your dog loves the water then a sprinkler is a great way to keep them cool while letting them get the outdoor exercise they need. Be sure to monitor them as they can still get over excited and end up overheating.

8. Your Biggest Fan

Buying a fan to place near your pet's bed or favorite lounge spot is another way you can keep then cool inside without raising your electric bill this summer. Make sure to place it in a spot that they can also avoid the breeze if they don't wish to have it.

9. A Cool Coat

There are cooling coats and harnesses that are specifically designed to keep your dog cool. It is activated with water. When the moisture evaporates it draws out the heat from the dog’s body, cooling them down. Making for long lasting relief from the heat. While these items can be costly, they are a great way to keep your dog cool when they need exercise despite the temperature.

10. Know The Signs

A heatstroke for a dog can be fatal and require immediate attention. Know what to look for if your dog is experiencing one. 

  • Collapse
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting/Diarrhea
  • Purple gums/Redness of skin
Keeping your pet safe while also having fun this summer is important! If you see any of these signs, get your dog somewhere cool, offer them water and contact your vet immediately.
